Why Dental Surgery? |
In India, dentistry has been one of the most neglected fields due to lack of general awareness
of the prevalence and severity of dental diseases. Moreover oral diseases are not life threatening or severely debilitating and therefore ignored by the public. National dental health statistics depict an alarming scenario in the country. Almost majority of the adult population in India suffers from periodontal
disease that is initially painless but chronic. This gradually leads up to loss of teeth, which people feel is due to old age. Dental caries is highly prevalent in adults. It is constantly increasing in
incidence and its severity in children, if not checked, leads to aggravation in oral diseases and nutritional problems. There is a compelling need for qualified manpower for the dental field. In India, the
dentist population ratio is estimated at 1:1,80,000.The Dental Council of India has recommended that there should be at least one dentist for every 20,000 of the population.
India requires adequate number of qualified dental surgeons to cater the Dental Health Care Programmes to its 1 billion population. |
