What do Pharmacist do?

Pharmacy is a health profession in which pharmacists provide care for their patients as one member of the health care team. This care focuses on the patient from the perspective of drug therapy. The pharmacist is responsible to identify, prevent and resolve patients' drug therapy problems. Specific activities include: taking medication histories, identifying goals for drug therapy, providing recommendations and education to patients regarding self-medication, providing recommendations to other health care providers on drug therapy, working with patients to maximize benefits and minimize adverse effects of drug therapy, maintaining patient drug profiles, counselling patients on prescribed medication, monitoring drug interactions, adverse drug reactions and patients compliance with their drug treatment. Other activities include the provision of information on drugs to patients and other health professionals, the preparation of suitable materials for use as medicines from natural and synthetic sources, the compounding of drugs and the dispensing of suitable medication.

In other words, pharmacists serve society as professionals who are responsible for the optimal use of drugs. This means that the pharmacist's primary responsibility is to individual patients. The ultimate goal of pharmaceutical care is to improve an individual patient's quality of life. This is achieved by working with the patient to determine if any drug-related needs exist which are preventing the patient from attaining their desired quality of life and then meeting those needs.

Why Pharmaceutical Science?

Pharmacy - Future Prospects India has a vast and growing pharmaceutical industry. With the implementation of the WTO proposals on intellectual property rights, Indian companies will have to increase their focus on research and development of new medicines. Indian companies have also started exporting bulk drugs and formulations. On the other hand Indian population is ever increasing and the country is still a laggard in the field of healthcare with even basic healthcare not readily available to all. All these factors indicate that Indian healthcare industry has a long way to go and pharmacists have to play a vital role in it. Apart from being a pharmacist, with more academic work they can move into pharmacology or become pharmaceutical chemists. Those who are academically - minded combine pharmaceutical and legal education to pursue jobs as patent lawyers or consultants on pharmaceutical and drug laws. In the coming years there will be an increasing demand for qualified pharmacists in all sectors namely research, manufacturing, marketing and retail.
