about the Kalyani area

“Home is where the heart is.”

The sprawling JIS College of Engineering campus is located in Kalyani 55 Km North of Kolkata. The evolution of this quaint little township, as we see it now, commenced in the 50s with former Chief Minister of Bengal, Dr. B. C. Roy's dream of establishing a satellite township which would absorb some of the growing population of Kolkata, while at the same time, complementing the mother city in terms of industry, education and all kinds of health and civic amenities. Kalyani is home to some of the premier educational institutes and research centers in West Bengal, viz, Bidhan Chandra Krishi VishwaVidyalaya, Kalyani University, BT College etc. A number of schools of high stature are also worthy of mention. Being a center of higher learning, Kalyani can brag of a large population of teachers and doctors. Currently, Kalyani is a sub divisional town spread over 30 sq km and home to almost 1 lakh people located 55 km north of Calcutta in Nadia district of West Bengal. Kalyani is well established on the Indian railway map with the unique feature of 4 rail stations within the town limits. Nestled among plush greenery, huge lakes, along with a stadium, auditorium and much more makes the town an idyllic setting for academic pursuits.

Right at the banks of the river Ganges is Panihati – a locality steeped with illustrious history of more than five hundred years. A confluence of different religious and linguistic groups has created Panihati into a multicultural potpourri. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Panihati became focal point for academic activities in and around the then Calcutta. The Founder of Asiatic Society, Bharatbhandhu William Jones came here to learn Sanskrit. Over the years eminent personalities like Kabiguru Rabindranath Thakur, Sri Srimad Ramakrishna Paramhansadev, Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, Litterateur Rajshekhar Basu, Sukumar Roy had come to this place and enriched it.

Since the advent of 20^th Century, Panihati had become and important geographical destination for its industrial belt, textile hub, academic institutions, with distinct footprint in the economy, polity, and culture of the country.

JIS Group has separate campuses of 4 educational institutions (Guru Nanak Institute of Dental Science & Research, Guru Nanak Institute of Technology, Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science & Technology and Guru Nanak Institute of Hotel Management) within an integrated educational hub. Within the Kolkata PIN area, it is well connected with one most historic and important road – the B. T. Road. It is also at stone’s throw distance of Sodepur Rail Station in the Sealdah Rail route.

Narula Insitute of Technology is situated at Agarpara, the previous station to Sodepur at the Sealdah Rail route. It is also very close to the Barrackpore Trunk Road (B. T. Road)
